How so?
His previous owner sold him, because he was moving from New Jersey to Hawaii and could not take Harley with him, although he said that he wished he could. He returns to New Jersey from time to time to visit his family and always pays Harley a visit as well. He usually leaves me a little note saying how good Harley looks and that he was glad to see him again. I do not know which island he moved to, otherwise I could have returned the visit while I was out there. There are huge farms in the northern region of the Big Island, complete with ranches, cattle, and cowboys. That is on my list for our next visit.
Even though I did not see many cows or horses during our tours of the island, apparently there is a thriving cattle industry in Hawaii. The number one export?

Not pineapples.
Not coffee or sugar cane.
Not mango, guava, papaya, or passion fruit.
Not Macadamia nuts.
Calves. As in baby cattle. ;)
Hawaii exports calves to the mainland, where ranchers raise the cattle and sell the meat as "Hawaiian Beef". Apparently it is a high selling point, but more than coffee or sugar cane? Too bad that I do not eat beef!
I'll still take the Dole plantation and their pineapple whips (ice cream) for my Hawaiian treat. And guava juice. Yum. Or how about POG (passion fruit, orange , guava) juice.
I think I am experiencing the food version of jet lag along with the actual jet lag. My husband and I could only fall asleep for one hour last night, even though we were up for 34 hours the day we returned. At least I have some Kona coffee to keep me company. :)

ReplyDeleteWeird that Cattle is the big export, I would think coffee or sugar would be too. I have never been to Hawaii, maybe someday...It sounds like you had a nice vacation. I bet Harley is happy you're back.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you guys had fun. I never particularly wanted to go to Hawaii before until a friend of mine went earlier this year and told me how great it was hehe. Now I'd love to go. It's so beautiful. Glad you're back safe and sound and I hope you get some rest.
ReplyDeleteHawaii is definitely worth the travel time and money. I did not know what I was missing until I visited the Big Island. I have also heard that Kauai is nice. Not too commercialized.
