Dear Mother Nature,

I totally appreciate your awesomeness.  I saw what you did during the Derecho Storm this summer.  I remember what you threatened before Hurricane Irene in August 2011.  I now own a generator, but I would really prefer to not have to use it.  You dropped a bunch of snow on northern New Jersey last year just before Halloween.  That was not an amusing trick and I do not want to be the victim of your attempt at weather-based comedy this year.  Dangerous weather is serious busy for us life forms.

I would like to ride my horse, try on his new boots, go to work, hand out candy on Halloween, and have a generally boring week, thank you very much.  May I remind you that I live in New Jersey?  I like it boring around here.  Since my state is so small, maybe you could just cut us some slack and skip right over us.  I do not think anyone will notice.  We hardly made the news during the Derecho when a third of the state lost power.  I promise not to tell that you gave us a break.

Respectfully yours,
Val

  1. Totally relating to your post. I hope you are spared! :D

I think Mother Nature overlooked the fact that there were still several days of vacation left to enjoy. I thanked her profusely for the last month of perfect weather, but probably pushed my luck when mentioning out loud that it was so nice not worry over any hurricanes this fall...

    1. I thought maybe last year was a fluke.
      Major bummer.

      Stay safe.

  2. Is this a petition I could sign somewhere? I'd like to add New York to the list! Stay safe.

    1. Why didn't I think of that?

New York is also in the danger zone. What the heck? It is not like we are anywhere near the Caribbean.

  4. Geez, you live pretty far north to be dealing with hurricanes! It's pretty common here in Miami, though, so I can offer some advice:
    1. Breakaway halter with luggage tag attached that has all your contact info, vet's phone #, etc.
    2. Second luggage tag with all the above info braided into the tail
    3. Livestock markers used to write all the same info onto the horse's body (plus, this is super fun!)
    3. Fill EVERYTHING with water just in case
    4. Make sure you have at least seven days of food dor yourself and all animals
    Best of luck!

    1. I know! New Jersey should not be worrying about getting the brunt of a hurricane. To make matters worse, there is another storm with a cold front moving from the west. They are supposed to meet on the eastern coast. Cape May and some other parts of the coast are already being evacuated, because there is also a spring tide which may create a storm surge.

      Thanks for the tips.

Unfortunately, I am becoming practiced, since we had to prepare for Irene last year.

  5. Ha! Love this! Here in Michigan, we have predications of snow right the day before Halloween. Ugh! I'd take another mild winter, please!

I hope you do not have a white Halloween.

    1. I will update as soon as I can. There is a good chance that we will lose power. The schools are already closed for Monday and Tuesday.

      Thanks, Mary!

  7. I thought of you and other bloggers as I watched the weather news... Getting a family and house animals out is hard enough.... but those with horses have a LOT more on their plate! I hope it blows on by as well!

    1. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts.

We are not being evacuated, but all of the barrier islands and Cape May are. Some of those places are less than 40 miles away from me. If we had to move farther inland, I do not know where we would go. All of my state and the surrounding states as far west as Ohio are in the "red zone". There is no where to run. Thank goodness we are not at sea level like those living directly on the coast.

  8. I just watched the storm track coverage on weather.com and noted how the hurricane force wind is going to settle directly over New Jersey and I thought about you.

This is almost the same kind of storm that drowned Oswego and Binghamton and flooded our basement last year. Our water table is lower this year so that might save us from the really bad flooding.

I'll be thinking about you (and Arlene) and hoping that nobody gets hurt.

    1. Thank you. New York is making similar preparations.

  9. Be safe. Hopefully the storm will stay far, far to the east - like out in the Atlantic. Weird how drastically different the weather is from one coast to the other ... we're expecting low 80s here in CA. Wish we could split the difference with you. :0)
